When you're in debt, the last thing you want to do is pay for debt help. At this point, offers for free debt help can prove to be quite tempting. But buyer beware--these offers for free debt help usually mean that just a portion of the service offered is free.
What's Free in Free Debt Help?
Sometimes offers for free debt help mean the initial consultation is free. Or maybe the first month's fee is free. Or perhaps the free debt help portion of their service is free debt counseling. This by no means is bad. Just remember, there's rarely such a thing as a free lunch in life. Offers for free debt help are generally promotional in nature, but it doesn't take away from the quality of the debt help services that offer it. You do, however, have to do your homework on these companies, just as you would have to on any other company you might choose to help you get out of debt. After all--it's your credit you're dealing with. You don't want to trust that to just anyone.
What to Look For
When searching for a reputable company for debt help, you want to make sure of certain things, like:
- Has the company been in business for a number of years?(Bear in mind, the debt help industry has been around 10-15 years.)
- Is the company nationally certified and accredited? What about their advisors?
- Does the company have a physical street address or just a post office box? (If there's no physical street address, it could be a fly-by-night operation.)
- Are your creditors willing to work with them?
- Are they willing to answer all your questions without hesitating?
Just remember--free debt help doesn't mean totally free, but you can get a good deal if you find the right company.
